We use a developmentally driven instructional approach to teach phonics, vocabulary, and spelling to improve literacy skills. Words Their Way offers a teacher-directed, student-centered plan for vocabulary growth and spelling development. All of the 4th grade students took a spelling inventory in order for us to determine their levels. Your child’s spelling words are tailored to meet his or her needs. A few of the homework activities require parent participation. We encourage you to take part in your child’s literacy development. Use these links to practice your word skills:
Prefix Mix - working with "Pre" and "Post," prefixes with opposite meanings. Prefixes Make New Words - Drag and drop the prefixes to complete the words correctly. The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives - Let’s say you’re learning about the relationship between fractions, percents and decimals. I could have you draw graphs or do a series of problems that changes just one variable in the same equation. Or I could give you a “virtual manipulative” and let you experiment with equations to reach an understanding of the relationship. The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives, run by a team at Utah State University, has been building its database of these tools since 1999.
